Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan
Getting out of a lease
I'm losing my job next week, can I get
out of my lease without going to court?
Can my landlord force me to keep
paying rent after I leave?

Re: Getting out of a lease
You are obligated to comply with the terms of the lease you entered. You agreed to pay rent for a certain time and must do that unless your landlord has breached the agreement in a way that releases you from your obligations. However, the landlord can't force you to do anything as only a judge can do that. Once you leave, the landlord has to sue you to procure the money owed. After he receives a judgment for the money owed, he must then request an order to garnish your wages and/or attach other income.
