Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan
question
We rented a house for about 6 years. We we moved in we had to knocked down a room and clean significantly in order to move in. We have now been out of the house for since August. Actually we moved out July 10 the same day we closed on our new house. We never had a renters contract with the landlords. They are now claiming to sue us for not cleaning it to there standards. It was left in better shape then what we moved into. The house is old. Has water problems in the basement so there is mold. Been there since we moved in with a broken basement wall, water is undrinkable, wiring and pipes were not up to code, and they have another garage they use that was hooked up to our electricity. They knew about all of the above. My question to you is do my husband and I have any reason to be concerned with them suing us. We personally believe they are upset because they wanted us to buy it and we refused. Now they want to sell just the house and have it moved off the premises. Which its not up to code and is not simply worth it. However I do not believe we are the ones to set the house up to there standards to sell. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,

Re: question
Should you be sued, the case will boil down to the proofs. The Plaintiff / Landlord would have the burden of going forward with evidence to prove his claims with a preponderance of the evidence. If the facts are as you say, it does not appear that you have reason to be concerned.
