Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

They Said/I Said

My apt complex is charging me for rent after I moved out of my apt because they claim I did not fill out a notice to vacate (I did - in writing and over the phone) and did not leave a fwd-ing address (I did - with the keys), but they have no record of any of this. When I called them looking for my security dep last mo., they said that it's on its way and I didn't have a balance due (notice they said nothing about my address and missing notice to vacate). Now they say my file is on its way to the collection agency. Do I need to take this to court? Where can I find a good lawyer if I do?

You should take the matter to court. You can handle the matter yourself in small claims court or alternatively, you could retain a lawyer to assist you. If you are interested, I could write a letter for you at minimal expense to you. Correspondence from an attorney in some cases will take care of the matter without much ado. If you are interested, please visit my website at www.lawrefs.com or contact me directly via email. Alternatively, if you wish to retain other counsel, look in your local yellow pages or go to the Michigan State Bar Association website. This is not a complex matter for a local attorney to handle for you.
