Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

I was a tenant in a commercial property. I sold my business and the new tenant took over with a sublease from me. When my lease term expired the new tenant got a lease extention from the landlord even though they were behind in their rent. The tenant continued to pay but the landlord quit applying their payment to the old balance and is holding me responsible for what was owed prior to the lease extension. Is that legal?

It'sa tough question to answer without seeing the lease and extension. Generally funds would be applied to the oldest balance first and then to newer balances. Obviously you shouldn't be required to pay any amounts after the extension since that was not your lease term. Good luck.
