Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

Does a tenant have the right to review their leasing files...

Friends are moving out of state and have applied for a new apartment in Texas. The apt. complex they currently live in told the new complex in Texas that they have had 12 eviction notices due to being 30 days late on rent this was news to the family since they never received said notices. The couple has requested to see their leasing file and the management company told them that would not be possible as it is not theirs to see. The husband already relocated to Texas and the rest of the family is being held up due to the misinformation the current complex is telling the potential complex. The current complex has admitted that they ''might'' have gotten some of the information they gave to the complex in Texas wrong, and some of the problems have been rectified but the family is concerned that without knowing what is in their file their ability to move into the new complex will be a shot in the dark. Why wouldn't tenants be allowed to review their file if it is their personal information? If the files include their pertinent info shouldn't they be able to review the files just as we are able to review our personal files at work to have explainations given if misinformation is in those files? Thank you for your time.

If the tenant believes there is untrue documents in their file which are affecting their ability to obtain a lease/housing elsewhere, then I would recommend they hire a lawyer to demand production of a copy of the file.
