Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan
My tenants burned their apartment. Am I as a landlord required to find them a place to live and return rent paid for this month. Also do I need to compensate the tenants living in the lower unit who are now displaced?

You surely have a police report and a fire department report showing that the tenants caused this fire. You or your insurance company will likely pursue them for damages if they have any money or assets. Your lease should indicate your duties, (if any) in the event that the property becomes inhabitable. If your property is not habitable, the renters can move out, and not owe rent. You must refund any advance rent and damage deposit, where the tenants did not cause damage. You must send a written notice of damage to the tenants who did cause damage, and/or get a court order to keep their damage deposit.
