Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan
things left behind
An individual left some things on my parents property. He had been living there previously but there was no lease agreement. They have asked him on several occasions to remove it but he has not done so for almost 4 months now. At what point can they get rid of his things without being sued?

Re: things left behind
I suggest your parents send this individual a certified letter with return receipt requested (keep a copy of the letter) giving the individual 21 days to remove his/her items or they will be donated to a charity or tossed out. Also, state in the letter that the individual has been contacted several times by phone or in person (whichever is the case) over the last several months to remove his/her items. If the individual after receipt of the letter and passage of 21 days, refuses to remove his/her items, your parents may do away with them as stated in the letter. Keep the return receipt as proof of the individual's proof of receipt of the letter.
