Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Michigan
Medical records
I would like to know if medical records belong to the patient or the doctor. My doctor is leaving the state and wants $20.00 for a copy of my records. The office personnel says the records belong to the doctor. I feel that I have paid for those records and should have them and no other copies should be kept.

Re: Medical records
The doctor can charge a reasonable fee for copying the records. $20 is probably on the mark. However, what you are really objecting to is the mentality of the medical profession where they practice medicine while sucking their patients and the insurers financially dry and then they complain. Watch the movie Patch Adams and you will see how the admissions process into medical school weeds out many good people. Bill Stern
