Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Michigan
Multijurisdictional Practice
What is the latest on the move to change the state by state practice of law to multijurisdictional? Where people take one bar and can practice anywhere in the states.

Re: Multijurisdictional Practice
It's news to me. There is such a glut of lawyers in each state that each state bar wants to put their own limits on the practice. Furthermore, there are substantial differences between states now, more so than ever. While there has been a great move in recent years toward uniform statutes, there are substantial differences between states on everything from auto accidents to statute of limitations, when causes of action acrue, etc. In other words, the nuts and bolts of practice, the stuff that gets a lawyer into trouble, is still very different from state to state. The best policy and one that will be followed into the future, is to require an out of state lawyer handling a single case, to get special permission to practice for that one case and be supervised by a local attorney.
