Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Michigan

Termination of client attorney relationship

I am dissolving my relationship with my attorney. I recall seeing it written somewhere that the attorney must return the file to the client upon the clients request, regardless of the financial relationship which exists between the client and attorney?

If possible please direct me to that ruling.

Re: Termination of client attorney relationship

You should check with the Michigan Bar Association on their own particular rules regarding the return of the file because there may be particular rules on this. For example, there are those documents which you might have provided and those documents which your attorney produced. In addition, there are in some areas what are known as retaining liens and charging liens allowed to attorneys in connection with their handling of a client matter. It may be that you might be required to pay copying costs.
