Legal Question in Medical Malpractice in Michigan

Puncture of carotid artery leading to AMI

My mother, 63 yrs. of age, was to receive a kidney transplant from myself and/or my neice, who were both a perfect match. In preparation for the transplant, a routine cardiac workup found that she had some coronary artery blockage and to maximize circulation to ensure success of the transplant she should undergo a scheduled (non-emergent)bypass which was to be done 2-03. During placement of the Swan-Ganz catheter her carotid artery was punctured. She had significant bleeding. The by-pass was postponed. She went to ICU,with chest pain and within 36 hours had a massive MI/cardiogenic shock. Death was imminent. On call cardio doc asked permission to do emergent stent placement, stating she would die without it(by-pass she required was no longer an option)and no guarantee of life, as it would require placing her on a balloon-pump, meaning possible loss of her legs as well as life. We agreed, chosing a chance at life. She barely survived the surgery. Weeks later she was released from the hospital, no longer a candidate for kidney transplant related to her cardiac status. She began a downward spiral due to cardiac muscle damage and severe leg/back pain. She died 9-03 of heart failure. Is this medical mal leading to wrongful death?

Re: Puncture of carotid artery leading to AMI

The medical records would have to be submitted to a cardiologist for review. There is no other way to determine if the doctor violated the standard of care owed to your mother. I'd be happy to review the case. I have 28 years experience and have the highest rating in this area of law. William S. Stern 248-353-9400
