Legal Question in Personal Injury in Michigan

Law firm misrepresenting me in a personal injury case and settling for less than

Two years ago, i fell down a back stairway that was mainly used for a fire escape, however parking was only available in the back where the steps were located. It was in the winter, i injured my back and have had nothing but medical costs to a chiropractor, mri testing and I want compensation from the landlord for what will be a life long disability for me. My present lawyer who has only 8 weeks now to arrange for trial, sent his son who was most incompetent and suppose to be a lawyer to a mediation with the insurance company and wanted to settle for 2,000.00 dollars. My medical bills alone are 15,000. What can I do? thank you for your reply

Re: Law firm misrepresenting me in a personal injury case and settling for less

I think most attorneys like to think that other attorneys are doing a good job for thier clients, and I am one of those attorneys. The settlement value of any given case has many factors which might determine what an appropriate dollar figure should be in a fair settlement. In your case it might be a matter of liability, that is, was anyone actually negligent. Or there may be problems with contributory negligence, that is, did the client do anything or fail to do something to contribute to the accident. Or it just may be a matter of damages -- that your injuries aren't of the type that make juries give decent verdicts. It is impossible to tell from your e-mail alone what kind of job you attorney is doing. If you want a second opinion you should ask your attorney if you can pick up the file for an afternoon, with medicial records and transcripts, and take them to another attorney in your area for a second opinion.

Good luck to you.
