Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Michigan

Break Lease for Medical Emergency?

My mother was recently injured and will require my attention full time. I am past my original lease date expiration, and am currently paying month-to-month in an apartment, but would like to leave the apartment to move in with my mother. The lease stipulates that I must give 30 days notice prior to moving, or otherwise will be responsible for 30 days payment after leaving. Is there any legal precedent that could help me to avoid paying for these 30 days, given my emergency situation? Thanks...

Re: Break Lease for Medical Emergency?

Unfortunately, the landlord can require the 30-day notice, without exception. It's posible that the landord might let you out of the lease earlier. However, I do not know of an emergency situation that you describe allowing you to break out of a contract that you signed. Good luck.
