Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Michigan

carpet beggers or squatters rights?

We own our own moble home, it has been on my mother in laws farm for 23 years and we live in it. Now her other son wants us off the land. Do we have a legal claim to it? Or can they just up and tell us to take our trailer and get. This has been our home and we dont want to go. Is there like some kind of carpet beggers law or squatters rights?

Re: carpet beggers or squatters rights?

Have you always had the understanding that you did not have any property rights or interest in the land? Was there anything in writing? Unfortunately it sounds as though you are just renters/tenants on the land, and thus can be required to leave at any time with 30 days notice.

Is your trailer the only item on the land, or is there also a house or barn, etc?

Unless you were there for more than 14 years WITHOUT the owner's knowledge (i.e., "hostile"), you do not have a claim for adverse possession.

Perhaps youc can work out an agreement to remain on the land and/or purchase the land from the owner.

Good luck.
