Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Michigan
How do I contact the owner of the Apartment Complex I live in?
The manager of the apartment building I live in does not like me, and as a result, I have been made to wait several months, to several YEARS to get things in my apartment fixed. I've had it. How do I contact the OWNER to see if I can have the necessary repairs made to my apartment? The manager told me ''We don't give out that information.'' It must be within my rights as a renter to be able to contact the owner of the building and not be at the mercy of this horrible woman. I want things in order so when I move, she doesn't JAM ME!!!

To Whom It May Concern:
This is in response to your email of September 6, 2001, which this office received on October 24, 2001.
In a case such as this it is best to leave a paper trail for requests to your landlord to fix various problems of the apartment. Additionally, you have the right to obtain a copy of your lease. In Michigan there are various statutes concerning the rights of landlords and tenants. In your case, hopefully you had a check off form when you began renting the property, which listed the various defects in the apartment. If these items were never fixed during the term of your lease then you should not be responsible for the costs of these repairs. If there are substantial defects in your apartment complex you may wish to bring this to the attention of your local authorities.
Thank you for your question.
Sincerely,
Nichols & Eberth, P.C.

You, as a tenant, have many rights with regards to your apartment and lease. Minimal repairs in your apartment must be repaired by you and you can pay a prorata share of the monthly rent. If these repairs are ones that effect your habitability, then the landlord is required to repair or replace. I need more information from you. Please contact me by e-mail or phone. Thanks and good luck.
