What does 'husband and wife' mean on a deed?

It is as if a check drafted to two people, both of which own the check. However, the language following 'husband and wife' is also pertinent because Michigan does not favor joint tenancy and therefore, in order for the conveyance to be a joint tenancy, language to the effect of 'as joint tenants' must be included or the conveyance will be as tenants in common.
