Do we have a fighting chance??

My fiance was getting transferred for work so we sublet our apartment but in an effort to get rid of quickly we did not sign a lease agreement with the person we sublet to. We only had a verbal agreement. We found out from the apartment manager that they shorted the rent last month by 50bucks and they were late. We want to kick them out asap but we want them to pay for any damages they may have caused and for any unpaid bills they have. Will we succeed in our attempts to collect? Or did we screw ourselves?
