Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Michigan

My ex best friend left a bunch of books, clothes, and tobacco pipes at my house over the last year. Honestly, he let me borrow a few books about 6 months ago, non expensive ones you can easy replace at Borders, the clothes he left are just a few shirts I found outside by the pool as well as some beach towels of his. Him and I shared a common interest in cigar and different tobaccos and he left two rather nice pipes. Then a Beatles situation happen with his girlfriend and Yoko broke us up and he stopped talking to me about 3 months ago. A month and a half ago I emailed him asking him if he'd like his things and if we could arrange a time he could come get them seeing as how he has to drive past my house on the way to and from work. He responded and said he would like that and that he'd like to fix things. I have tried to contact him since and I have gotten no response. He is now contacting me DEMANDING his property back and it has been sometime now. Is it considered abandoned property now or do I have any other legal grounds I can stand on?

Thank you for your time.
