Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Michigan

How long to hold documents

I have moved several times. I have paid off mortgage papers and title company papers. How long do I need to keep these after I've sold a home. Homes were in California and Michigan.

Re: How long to hold documents

The most important document for you to keep are your payoff documents. A lender can always come back and say that you still owe them money. For that matter, you can be sued anytime because nothing prevents a person from filing. You would then be forced to defend and if you didn't have your paperwork, you would be in trouble.

The statute of limitations on contract claims is 6 years in Michigan. (I don't know California's but it would be easy enough to find.)

Since storage is an issue for me, I often scan documents to my computer and throw away the paper document.
