Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Michigan

I want to move out at seventeen. I already asked two other sites and they said i would have to get emancipated. But one of my friends said his brother lived on his own for a year and a half and the cops couldn't do anything about it. And i wouldnt be paying for rent or bills, so do i still have to get emancipated if im not the owner of an apartment? (i'd just live there and not pay rent or bills)
