Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Michigan

My son rents a room from a couple that leases from an individual. He paid his rent late for 3 months but paid. They are now saying that he owes then late fees of 4 times his rental on the bedroom he rents. I thought late fees were illegal in Michigan?

If late fees were illegal, no one would ever pay their rent on time. They cannot be excessive or a punishment, but certainly legal in a valid Michigan lease
