Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Michigan

vacation home

I own a vacation home with two brothers, I own a 1/4, another brother owns 1/4, and one owns half. Our family lawyer says we can't sell or do anything without all of us agreeing. The lawyer set up the agreement. I don't want the others know I want out until neccessary. I don't trust the lawyer, because he is related also. I know I should find an outside lawyer, but how far away should I go in order to keep this private? Another county? I don't think I can rely on our family lawyer to keep my best interest at the for front. If you can give me a direction to go I'd appreciate it.

Re: vacation home

You shouldn't have to go very far to find a lawyer who will keep this quiet. Attorney/Client confidentiality is part of the lawyer's job. You definitely should go to a different lawyer to ensure there is no conflict of interest.

Re: vacation home

You should take a look at the language of your deed. If the property is owned jointly with rights of survivorship, then you would all have to agree. If the property is owned as tenants in common, then you could sell your interest to an outsider and the new owner would share ownership with your siblings.
