Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Michigan

A woman claims homestead on two homes (rental properties). One home is titled in her name only, the second is titled with her & her husband. They are currently purchasing a brand new home (their third) and are claiming homestead on that one as well. What is the trigger to eliminate the homestead on their two rental properties? Their property taxes have not increased at all. How long can they get away with it?
