Without having any of my old tax documents for the years of 1987,1991,and 1997 how do I fight or defend myself against the claims by the city of Detroit of non payment of taxes for these years?

Unfortunately you would need to present some form of documentary evidence showing that you had previously paid your taxes. This can be your old tax forms, which you stated you may not have, or receipts of some kind. You may also try contacting the city tax department requesting your past records to see if they have them and could furnish copies.
