Legal Question in Traffic Law in Michigan

''Too Fast for Conditions''

I was in a car accident recently, and no one else was involved. I lost control on some ice going 35 mph in a 50 mph zone and ended up in a ditch. I called the police thinking it was the right thing to do but when he arrived he wrote me a ticket for driving ''too fast for conditions.'' It's a 3 point ticket. Can I contest the ticket? I cannot handle that many points on my license.

You can contest the ticket. The ticket should have a telephone number you call to request a hearing. It is probably worth hiring an attorney to handle for you.

On the back of your ticket is information about hearings. Be sure to request a formal (not informal) hearing as this will give you an opportunity to talk to the prosecutor before the hearing. He/She may give you a better deal depending on your driving record.

You can do it alone, but an attorney who knows the court is helpful.
