Legal Question in Traffic Law in Michigan

I recently received a ticket for disobeying a traffic signal (going through a detour). I just finished my hearing for the incident and the judge found me responsible. I simply cannot afford this ticket or the points that come with it. I am wondering if my options have run dry, or if there is something out there that I can do. I'm aware I can appeal, but not exactly sure if it's worth it. I'd be happy to give more details if you want. Thanks in advance.

I note that your zip code is in Ypsilanti. Washtenaw County is notorious for not negotiating tickets (or not negotiating below a two point ticket), unlike most other jurisdictions in this state. You can attempt to appeal the ruling but that appeal would be taken to the circuit court and you would have to write a brief and show how the judge erred on his ruling as a matter of law. That will be extremely difficult to do as the district court judge merely needs to find that you disobeyed a traffic signal by a preponderance of evidence. My strongest advice in these cases is if you do not like the policies in the county, it is best to take it to the voting booth and campaign for change.

If you lost at the informal hearing, then your appeal is NOT at the Circuit Court rather it remains in the District Court. You have a very short time period to appeal, so do it quickly. You will likely be required to pay the bond and fill out some paperwork for the appeal. The Court Clerk will then set it for a Formal hearing. If, however, you had the formal hearing then your appeal is through the Circuit Court. Again you have a short period of time to do this and it is time consuming. Best of Luck.
