Legal Question in Traffic Law in Michigan

I was struck from behind by a hit and run driver while driving my truck. I subsequently struck the vehicle in front of me. This was during a heavy snow storm today and it was very slippery with low visibility. The person who struck me never stopped. I pulled over and spoke with the lady I ran into (I rear-ended her). She sustained a fair amount of damage while I sustained little if any. She has PLPD insurance and that we didn't need to report it to the police if I would be willing to help get it fixed. I called the police and they verified that I didn't need to make a report, but my insurance agent told me not to pay them and to have their insurance handle it. Her husband called and wanted me to pay $1,000 dollars or he said he was going to file a report against me. I told him I was advised by my agent to advise them to go through their agent. He threatened me with a ticket and soon the police left me a voice mail telling me I should consider coming in and making a statement. Is this wise? What is my best course of action in this situation?

You may get a ticket regardless. As an insured driver, you are covered and can only be held responsible for $500 in damages called mini tort. You insurance may go up. You don't have to pay the other driver anything as your insurer will pay the $500.
