is it legal for a ploice officer to contact your auto insurance company to verify if your insurance is still effective?

It depends on the circumstances, but it is the driver's responsibility to carry valid proof of insurance and I suppose a police officer could call to confirm if it is valid. I know that some certificates of insurance are for a year and coverage can lapse. Hope this helps.
