Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Michigan

Advance directives

I am going through the process of getting bariatric surgery done. I am unmarried with no children. I was advised to fill out a will and an advanced directive. If I do this myself will it be legal or should I contact a lawyer?

Re: Advance directives

A will is legal if it conforms with the basic requirements laid out under the law. Just be specific in the will, as it will be interpreted if it is ambiguous. For more info, please contact my office at (248)851-3171.

Re: Advance directives

You can do a will yourself but it is best handled by legal counsel. If you decide to do what is called a holographic will in the State of Michigan it must be signed, dated and witnessed by two uninterested parties in order to be valid. However, if there is anything tricky about it (disinheretance, step-children, strange or unique bequests), again you should seek the advice of a lawyer. Most will do it on the cheap, especially me. :) Good luck! (248) 569-1900
