Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Michigan

deceased persons bills

My husband recently passed away. We had only been married for 9 months and we kept our finances seperate. My husband was disabled and received a small diability check from the VA that he used to pay his own bills. He had no other assets and there was no insurance monies. His total debt was about $6000 all on credit cards and most of which was incurred prior to our marraige. Am I responsible for these debts, or can I send the bills back with a copy of his death certificate?

Re: deceased persons bills

I am sorry for your loss.

Unless you were on the accounts or somehow guaranteed his debts, you are not personally liable. If he had assets, the bills would be paid as part of the probate proceeding. Go ahead and send them the death certificate, but they may keep sending notices, so you might have to be persistent.

If you need to do estate planning for yourself, feel free to call.
