The personal representative "stands in the shoes" of your father in law. Once a home goes to foreclosure sale, there is generally a 6 month redemption period where the home owner may pay the sale price and "redeem" the property from the purchaser of the foreclosure sale. The personal representative may be taking steps to try to sell the house and minimize the loss to the estate and if there is any equity, the personal representative has a duty to maximize the value of the estate by selling the house and retaining the proceeds for the estate.
