Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Michigan

Required time to serve Respondents to a Probate hearing

Is there a certain amount of time required when serving a notice of hearing? We received a registered letter letting us know we were Respondents to a Petition involving our Mother's Estate on Saturday at noon for a hearing that is to take place on Monday at 1:30 pm 55 miles away from our home. We don't even have the time to speak with a lawyer or to get necessary papers in order. Is this legal?

Re: Required time to serve Respondents to a Probate hearing

14 days notice is required if sent by any kind of mail. 7 days if there is personal service. However, you count the days starting with the day it was MAILED, not received. Show up in court and tell the judge you just got it Saturday and need to contact a lawyer.

My firm handles contested matters all over the state. Call if you wish to discuss the matter.

Best Regards,
