we''re thinking of putting mom in nursing home. the house we live in is in her name only. if we add our name to deed or mortgage will this stop the selling of the house because it would be considered a asset of moms

No, don't do that. Consult an elder law attorney and you will be able to save the house. But do no transfer it or put someone's name on it.
