If you want to stop making mortgage payments, you will eventually lose your house even if you file a bankruptcy. However, the bank ordinarily will not foreclose as long as you keep making payments. Fail to pay, and they will be asking the bankruptcy court for permission to go ahead with a foreclosure.
Except for a small amount of monkeying around, when you want to keep a house, a bankruptcy tends to have little effect.
