Can I file for bankruptcy if I've been served for a bad debt?

If you mean that you have been served with a summons and complaint for a debt you may owe, the answer is yes. There is nothing that precludes you from filing bankruptcy just because you have been served with a lawsuit.

The nice thing about bankruptcy is that it stops legal actions dead in whatever phase they might be. For example, if your wage is being garnished, bankruptcy can stop that. Being sued, as apparently you have been, can be a good sign that it's time to come see someone like me.
