It would be best to consult with a lawyer before you stop paying anything. Once you stop making payments, it's like burning the bridge behind you; and you better be sure you qualify for bankruptcy before you make that move. Of course if you don't have the money, you might not have much choice.

If you have a divorce in progress it is usually best to finish that before doing a bankruptcy. One thing at a time.

It usually takes me six weeks at least to put a bankruptcy case together for filing. Bankruptcy petitions tend to run fifty to sixty pages these days. There are something in the range of a thousand questions which must be answered. You are wise to not be trying to do it by yourself.
