Will filing chapter 7 rid me of a default civil judgement against me? (in the amount of 40 grand)

If all goes well in a Chapter 7, the answer to your question would be yes. However, certain kinds of debts cannot be discharged, so what kind of debt the judgment is for makes a big difference. If there is any kind of fraud or wrongdoing involved, the creditor is likely to file an objection that could block discharge of that particular debt.

Debts for unpaid taxes, child support, and student loans are just a few of the categories of debts that often won't be discharged.
