Legal Question in Business Law in Minnesota

non-profit business in Minnesota

I'm a 28 y/o man. I'm disabled (can't walk/talk). I was planning to start a non-profit business managing and promoting up&coming singers/groups.

I'm on SSI. I found out that the business that I'm venturing into requires me to hold events to showcase my clients. Those events draw in money. I can't receive any money because I'll lose my SSI.

My plan was to have somebody like my sister or someone that I trust to open a business bank account, so I can put whatever money my events generate into the account. That way my business will make money, but I can still keep my SSI.

Is any of this legal?

I would suggest a non-profit LLC. I could handle that for you, but it would be billable.

Thank you for your question regarding a talent promotion business. Your question is difficult to answer in the abstract, and I would be very concerned about carefully defining your relationship to the business. You should be concerned not only because the income could affect your SSI, but also because your work activity could affect your SSI eligibility, regardless of your income.

Before you enter into this business I really need to sit down with you and evaluate your current circumstances and the plan. This is more complicated than may appear on the surface. Please give me a call if you feel you are ready to proceed with the business. 952.285.2944
