The answer depends on the nature of the charge and what sentence was imposed. Generally, the court imposes a sentence and stays all or part of that sentence conditioned on probationary compliance. That compliance includes payment of a fine. If the fine is not paid, the court may find a violation of probation and impose a jail sentence. On a misdemeanor, that sentence can be up to 90 days.
You can also seek STS - a form of community service, to pay off the fine.
