Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Minnesota

Long story short. My landlord is very short tempered and lives below me. He is always yelling screaming slamming doors. Texting me about my personal life. We moved in Nov 12 our lease agreement was I pay $700 and my boyfriend works for him for the other $400. My boyfriend put in 40 hours per month the landlord didn't like the way he painted or shoveled and started charging me fines for his "bad work" and raised the rent on us. January 12th he told me I now owe him $1500 per month rather than $700. He demanded that I pay February rent when it isn't due until the Feb 5th. I told him I could not afford it that soon. He started texting me non stop. One morning he texted me 28 times while I was asleep in bed. I didn't answer and he walked up here unlocked my door and walked into my room screaming at me. He turned my electric off , went into our storage space and stole musical equipment and told us he pawned. The next day he then forced into our apartment once again picked up my boyfriends guitar and threatened to hit him with it. I called the police. I have called the police 6 times since 1/27/14. On 1/30/14 he gave me a letter stating I must pay him by 1/31 or he will file eviction and I will be forced to leave by 2/13. I do not have a lease I have a lease he texted me that I never signed. All the lease states is garbage rules and that if rent is received after the 5th there is a $55 late fee. On 1/30 he took my boyfriend and I's names off the mailbox. We now believe he has been stealing our mail we have a shared mail box and we notice he checks it constantly. We usually get 1 or two pieces per day and we haven't received any in a week. My question is that is what he is doing retaliation? I know what he is doing is a disruption of peace and privacy.
