Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Minnesota

Authorized user? do i have to pay up?

Last year my husband added me as an authorized user on his credit card. now it has over $10,000 in debt on it, and he is filing for bankruptcy, but i am not. He tried to get me off the card too but the credit card company would nto take me off. We were told by two different places (one a lawyer who wanted BOTH of to file even though I have relatively little debt myself) and one a credit counsselor told me that I am not responsible and to just ignore it as long as it's only showing up as ''authorized user'' on all my credit reports. The attorney said even after my husband files for bankrupcty the credit card co will hire a very good lawyer and sue me the authorized user for it. Can you clarify to me which is which and if I do need to hire a lawyer b/c I do not want to file bankruptcy either.

Thanks!

Generally, I think if you did not sign the contract and did not yourself use the card, you should not be yourself liable. However, if you do not file you may have to defend yourself in a lawsuit on the basis that you did not sign the contract and cannot be liable. Defending a lawsuit is a lot cheaper than paying $10,000 that you don't owe, however.
