Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Minnesota

Bad Check Recovery Statute of Limitations

In 1995 I bounced 3 checks in the state of Minnesota. I paid the debt with a money order in 1995. I can't find the receipt and I am not even sure as to where I even purchased the money order. Within the last two weeks my checks are no longer accepted at a local store due to the 3 checks that bounced in 1995. Is there a statute of limitations for this type of debt collection? I truly did pay this debt but I unfortunately no longer have a way to prove that I did pay the debt.

Re: Bad Check Recovery Statute of Limitations

The statute of limitations for contract actions in MN [6 years] only affects the time limit for bringing an action for breach of contract. Since you have paid off the checks, that issue is moot.

However, because of your issuance of checks which bounced, they may refuse to accept your checks based on your past history (essentially part of your credit history).
