Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Minnesota

Contract to advertise

I signed a form stating that I would advertise in the Verizon Directory. My total amount of $2,203 was under the column New Monthly Total. My understanding was that it was a one time fee. Verizon is stating that no it's a montly fee for a year and the form I signed was a contract for a year. It doesn't have a term of a year anywhere on the form, and a total of what I would owe. Isn't that necessary for the contract (as they say) to be valid? They have had people harrasing me for a year now stating that they are ready to go into letigation and take me to court, buty have been saying that for over a year now. Are they trying to take advantage of me, since I don't know the laws?

Re: Contract to advertise

First of all, telephone directories always charge monthly rates. It would seem that this is statesd on your contract since it did state it was a "New Monthly Total." Although it would be necessary to review the contract documents, it appears likely that Verizon has a strong case for a lawsuit.

Certainly you can negotiate with Verizon. You may be able to bnegotiate for payments over a longer period of time and terminate the advertising after one year. You may also agree to have the number advertised disconnected in order to eliminate the charges.
