Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Minnesota
Debt Collection Practices
I was contacted via phone by a debt collection agency. I was informed that a letter was mailed to me several months ago and that I had to pay by the end of the week or face civil suit. The problem is that I no longer reside at the residence the letter was sent to and was unaware of the preceedings. I requested that the debt collector send me proof of my debt and they refused to send anything until the balance was paid. Do I have the right to receivce proof at this point? I am curious about the 30 day rule, because I never actually received a notification letter.

Yes. You have an absolute right to request proof of the debt. You should do so in writing.
