Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Minnesota

my husband and i rented an apartment and when i lost my job we were evicted. we signed the least which was for one year. our rent was $750+utilities. and when we were evicted what we owed went up to $3580.00. now they've sold our debt to a debt collector. who is calling at all times. what i want to know is do we have to pay the debt collector the whole $3580.00?? I also just got a job which pays minimum wage. so we're living pay check to pay check!! sigh...

If you can't pay in full, and do not wish to file Bankruptcy (which can be expensive and complex these days) your other option is to have an attorney negotiate a settlement with them, writing off a good chunk of it, and setting up a manageable payment plan.
