Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Minnesota

I am having an issue with a debt collector and need to know what I can do. I have spoken to the collection agency that holds my credit card debt and 2 days ago we worked out a settlement, so Ii thought. When he asked for my checking or savings account number I refused because I don't want bill collectors obtaining that information, so I told him that I would go to my bank and get a cashiers check for the settlement amount and mail it to them. We also agreed that payment would be in their office by the close of business on August 31, but my plan was to go to the bank today and get the cashiers check and drop it in the mail so it would be there well before the deadline. He told me that I could not pay by cashiers check and that since 2 days have lapsed, the settlement offer has changed. What can I do??

If it were me personally, I would contact a consumer lawyer to discuss the situation. You may have rights that are being violated. For example, the debt collector may be trying to collect an amount that they are not entitled to this could be a violation of your rights.

You can contact our firm and we would be more than happy to discuss the matter with you. We focus on advocating on behalf of consumers, particularly against abusive debt collectors. You may visit our website at www.mincal.com or call at 952-314-1400.
