Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Minnesota

Is it legal for collectors to contact my girlfriend? I have no idea how they knew she was my girlfriend or where they got her cell number.

Debt collectors may communicate with third parties only under limited circumstances... They may not discuss any alleged debt with your girlfriend. You should contact a consumer rights firm that is familiar with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Our firm would be more than happy to hear from you.

Debt collectors cannot contact third parties to discuss debts of others. They can contact a third party to acquire location information about you, if they don't have that information already. In most cases, their action in contacting third parties is illegal and the consumer can sue them. You can contact a consumer attorney for more details. Our firm in Minnesota will be glad to talk with you. We don't charge for the initial consultation and if you have a case we will handle your case on contingency.
