Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Minnesota

Who is legally entitled to receive copies of Death Certificates?

If a person dies with credit card and other debts, are the companies he owed legally entitled to receive copies of the death certificate? The deceased person was single and left no estate or property. Should the requests for copies of death certificates be ignored? Thank you.

If the person left no estate (no assets- only debts), there is no obligation to do anything. If there was a will with a personal representative, that person should notify creditors that there was no estate.

Supplying a copy of the death certificate will

stop any further inquiries from creditors, but there is no obligation to provide it.

Of course if a lawsuit is brought, a creditor could subpoena such record.
