I really don't know what else they could do to you: isn't being Canadian punishment enough?

You get sued. The issue has nothing at all to do with citizenship. You can get sued in either of 2 places - (1) where the debot arose or (2) where you live. A judgment against you in the State where the debt arose is enforceable against you in British Columbia.
