how do i put a lien on a house?

i was married for just a short while and i was the one who put money into the marriage, i.e. down payment on house, paid off his credit cards. i already divorced but a friend told me i could put a lien on his house and collect that money when he sells. is this correct?

The answer depends on what your divorce decree states and to whom the real esatet was awarded. The order would control.

There is no basis to place a lien on a home without a judgement.

No, in California this matter would have to be handled by the Family Law Court which would have jurisdiction over the issue. You cannot independently put a lien on such a former asset previously adjudicated in your divorce action unless there are new, previously unknown justifications for doing so. You should recontact your divorce lawyer about your claims.
